The roguelike and roguelite genres have had a ton of games released, especially survivor-likes, since the success of Vampires Survivors. Jotunnslayer succeeds in laying a great foundation for a hit. Released in January this year, and their first major update out just a couple days ago, I'd say it's in my top roguelite games to dump a ton of hours into and get that Perfect Game for 2025.
Exploring the dark realms of Norse mythology, Jotunnslayer pits you against hordes of demons, monsters, bugs, and giants, while you hurry to complete special objectives with the goal of accessing the realm of the Jotunn before the time runs out. The game currently features 4 classes: Berserker (warrior), Seeress (mage), Revenant (archer), and Flame Sister (elemental rogue). Each has class specific abilities to choose from during the run, as well as permanent stat buffs and evolved skills to buy out of the run. With the most recent update, they also added a new god, making five total, for even more buffs and skills to use.
Unique mechanics is usually what determines most of the roguelites I spend a lot of my time in, and Jotunnslayer has done well to divert from the standard roguelite recipe. Runs are timed, but to make it to the Jotunn's realm for the boss fight, you have to beat a set number of objectives based on the difficulty. From killing elite monsters and collecting Norse relics to defeating a horde of otherworldly monsters and solving runic puzzles, it adds an element of managing the time you spend doing an objective and collecting other bonuses on the map, ensuring you have enough time to get to the Jotunn portal.
Still in Early Access on Steam, but IMO, well worth it. They haven't added Steam Achievements yet, which I know is a huge piece for a lot of gamers to pull the trigger. I'm confident they'll put a system in place so you get them for prior runs. I hope they add more than 4 classes, too. Some kind of Norse beast or monster would be an awesome addition to the human-type classes. Great work to the devs, Grindstone Games and ARTillery.
