Free Game: TripleA - Open Source Board Game Crossover

Open-source gaming continues to surprise me, delivering some really great titles over the years (some original, some revised versions of other games.  Games like FreeCiv and OpenTTD are awesome (and free!).

TripleA, coined as the World's Foremost Open-Source Grand Strategy Game is an open-source board game somewhat based on Axis and Allies, playable single or multiplayer online, community run, TONS of different maps and scenarios available for download right in the client.  I created an account and was online and looking for games within minutes.  There's definitely a thriving community, as the game list had a couple dozen games running and waiting for players, and nearly 100 players in the waiting room.  I'm definitely looking forwarding to trying some of the Star Wars maps.  Here's some of the features:

Special Game Features:

  • Can Save at any moment
  • Player disconnect generate a savegame, so that you can rehost without losing any time or information, and can even replace the player who dropped if need be
  • Can view game history at any moment, showing not just what happened and the dice rolled, but also how the entire board/map looked
  • Many game options, including a Bidding system, and Low Luck (a method of reducing the luck in a dice game)
  • Edit mode to add and delete units, change money, change territory ownership, and even move pieces around
  • Over 18 different skins for the user interface, ability to switch map skins in game
  • Can zoom out on maps, and can change the size of the units
  • Online and in-game chat, support for sounds
  • Battle Calculator shows you average results of 5000 simulated battles of opposing forces you choose from
  • Dice and Game statistics, shown in game and can be exported to files
  • Ability to set different victory condition

Huge Variety:

  • Though the majority of our maps and games revolve around World War II, we also have:
  • World War I games
  • World War 3 games, like the Cold War or future conflicts
  • Fantasy styled games, like Lord of the Rings games and Dungeons and Dragons
  • Ancient History games, like the Punic Wars between the Roman Empire and Carthage
  • Other Historical conflicts, like the Napoleonic Wars
  • Abstract Maps, like things on hex maps
  • Futuristic games, like Star Wars, or Zombieland

UltimaCodex Is Killing Me Today - An Ultima VII BOARD GAME!?

UltimaCodex is so much good stuff in one place, but my heart drops when I find a project on there I've never read about, only to find out it never happened.  THERE WERE PLANS FOR AN ULTIMA VII BOARD GAME!  This should have happened.  It still should happen.  Richard Garriott, please make it happen.  Here's a snapshot of the prototype board :( I am now thoroughly depressed.

Wizards by Avalon Hill - Play It Again On PC

Had an amazing find tonight as I was browsing abandonware.  Wizards was one of my favorite board games growing up, although I rarely got to play it, and I'm not even sure I ever finished a game.  That seems to be a trend for the favorites.  I still have an original print of it, but it's so hard to find a dedicated group of players to go through with it.  BUT, I discovered that someone made a java-driven version of it playable on the PC! Played it through once (extremely difficult to complete solo, if at all possible, due to the fortnight rules), however it can add all players.  It's definitely playable by multiple people on the same machine, and I'm betting a Skype meeting could be set up by sharing the main screen and giving control to the other players.  Download the java version and try it out! Credit to whoever "dewkid" is that seems to be the author of it.  The game doesn't include rules (and neither does the download site).  Couldn't find any online either, save for some alternate and house rules.  Enjoy!

Can't figure out what board game to buy next? Try this handy flowchart.

This is pretty amazing.  While I don't mind reading up on player's comments about how a particular is good or bad, the fact that it's still a subjective opinion still weighs on my mind.   Here we have objective ideas and game mechanics that will help me pick my next game.  Major props to whoever took the time to do this.

Boardgame Review: JUNTA

Many a weekend have I spent playing JUNTA, just to do it all over again at the soonest chance I could get.
